Emily Van Atta joined the Commission as Fiscal and Operations Director in August of 2016. Emily comes to the Commission from the Department of General Services (DGS). At DGS, Emily started out in the Office of Small Business and Disabled Veterans Business Enterprise (DVBE) providing education outreach and certification to California’s Small Businesses and DVBEs before moving into real property acquisitions with the Real Estate Services Division.
After returning from Pregnancy Disability Leave with her first child in 2015, Emily developed a “Parental Leave Handbook”, a comprehensive guide of leave available to DGS employees to help them navigate the leave process for the birth or adoption of a child. DGS Executive is currently processing the Parental Leave Handbook for department-wide implementation. Emily is a strong advocate for expanded family leave rights in California and continues to work towards a Parental Leave Handbook for all State employees.
Emily holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from CSU, Sacramento. During her time as a student Emily was honored to participate in a symposium hosted by the San Francisco Federal Reserve, a semester long program that culminates in students simulating a meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, voting on monetary policy and targeting the federal funds interest rate. Additionally, Emily served as a Student Advisor to the Associated Students, Inc. providing Cost/Benefit Analysis of extracurricular programs on campus. Emily also is a Charter Member and past President of the Student Economics Association. Emily is the first female in her family to earn a Bachelor’s degree.
Emily volunteers with the Junior League of Sacramento where she currently serves as the Junior Delegate of the Junior Leagues of California State Public Affairs Committee and sits on the Subcommittee for Violence Prevention. In this role, Emily advocates for legislation that will positively impact the lives of women and children in California.
Emily is the Mother of two small children whom she credits as her motivation in working towards gender and racial equity; Both she and her partner, Trent, were born and raised in the greater Sacramento area and are proud to call Sacramento home.
