SUMMARY:All Women's Equal Pay Day
DESCRIPTION:Equal Pay Day was developed by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men’s and women’s wages. This date symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. Because the wage gap is wider for women of color\, multiple dates exist corresponding with women belonging to different racial/ethnic groups. Women make up about 47 percent of the overall workforce\, yet make up 58 percent of the low-wage workforce\, defined as those working in jobs that typically pay less than $11 per hour. They make up 69 percent of the very low-wage workforce—those working in jobs that typically pay less than $10 per hour\, according to data by NWLC. Across all occupations\, low or high wage\, and even in occupations where women are overrepresented\, they experience a wage gap. This impacts retirement savings\, families well-being\, and the greater economy.

SUMMARY:STD Awareness Month | Women's Eye Health & Safety Month
DESCRIPTION:STD Awareness \nMany health organizations rally together during this month to raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections and disease\, help reduce STD-related stigma and provide actionable steps to help mitigate the increase in STDs in the United States. There are dozens of STDs. Some STDs\, such as syphilis\, gonorrhea\, and chlamydia\, are spread mainly by sexual contact. Other diseases\, including Zika and Ebola\, can be spread sexually but are more often spread through ways other than sex. Find key resources and information regarding STD by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/std/default.htm \nWomen’s Eye Health & Safety \nMany people think their eyesight is just fine\, but then they get that first pair of glasses or contact lenses and the world comes into clearer view—everything from fine print to street signs. Improving your eyesight is important—about 11 million Americans over age 12 need vision correction—but it’s just one of the reasons to get your eyes examined. Regular eye exams are also an important part of finding eye diseases early and preserving your vision. Eye diseases are common and can go unnoticed for a long time—some have no symptoms at first. A comprehensive dilated eye examexternal iconexternal icon by an optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye doctor) is necessary to find eye diseases in the early stages when treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective. SUMMARY:Black Maternal Health Week
DESCRIPTION:Each year in the United States\, about 700 women die during pregnancy or in the year after. Every pregnancy-related death is tragic\, especially because most are preventable. Conditions such as weakened heart muscle\, thrombotic pulmonary embolism\, and high blood pressure contributed to a significantly higher proportion of pregnancy-related deaths among African American women than among white women. To reduce disparities\, multiple sectors need to work to address the factors contributing to these deaths. Read more about different sectors can do to resolve this issue HERE

SUMMARY:Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention Month | American Stroke Month | International Doula Month | Lupus Awareness Month | National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month | Preeclampsia Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention Month \nEvery 73 seconds\, an American is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes\, that victim is a child. Sexual violence impacts every community and affects people of all genders\, sexual orientations and ages. Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and it brings advocates and communities together to help prevent these crimes. Each one of us can help promote healthy and positive relationships that are based on respect\, safety and equality. Call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area. Learn more about this day\, please visit https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotline\, https://www.nsvrc.org/saam\, https://www.dea.gov/stories/2021/2021-04/2021-04-14/sexual-assault-awareness-prevention-month \nAmerican Stroke Month \nAmerican Stroke Month was created to promote public awareness and reduce the incidence of stroke in the United States. Stroke is a leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of serious disability for adults. About 795\,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year. Get more quick facts about stroke. Stroke is preventable. You may be able to prevent stroke or lower your chances of having a stroke. Stroke is treatable. Learn the signs of stroke\, and call 9-1-1 right away if you think someone might be having a stroke. Getting fast treatment is important to preventing death and disability from stroke. Visit https://www.cdc.gov/stroke/ to learn more about strokes. To learn more about American Stroke Month\, please visit https://www.heart.org/en/professional/quality-improvement/american-stroke-month-qora \nInternational Doula Month \nBoth birth & postpartum doulas are being celebrated for the important contributions they make to maternal-infant health & the family’s birth & postpartum experience. A doula is a professional who provides emotional\, physical and informational support to families during the childbearing year. A doula can be a birth doula who supports the labor and birth\, or a postpartum doula who supports the parent-baby dyad and other family members after the baby is born. Do you know the benefits of using a doula at your birth? What about having a doula help you after you’ve had the baby? Find out what a doula can do for you! https://www.dona.org/what-is-a-doula/benefits-of-a-doula/ Here’s a great guide on how to hire the perfect doula for you! https://www.dona.org/what-is-a-doula/how-to-hire-a-doula/ \nLupus Awareness Month \nLupus is a chronic\, autoimmune disease that affects more women than men. If you have lupus\, your risk is higher for other health problems that are common in women\, such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Anyone can get lupus. It is difficult to know how many people in the United States have lupus\, because the symptoms are different for every person. It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans have lupus. Other estimates range from 161\,000 to 322\,000 Americans with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Lupus is most common in women ages 15 to 44\, or during the years they can have children. Having lupus raises your risk of other health problems. Lupus can also make these problems happen earlier in life compared to women who do not have lupus. Learn more about lupus by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/lupus/basics/women.htm \nNational Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month \nWhile there have been advances in reducing teen pregnancy\, progress is still needed to close racial/ethnic and geographic disparities in teen birth rates in the United States. Although the teen birth rate is at a historic low\, the United States has one of the highest rates in the industrialized world\, with birth rates higher among American Indian/Alaska Natives and non-Hispanic blacks than among their non-Hispanic white counterparts. NTPPM is about more than preventing teen pregnancy. It’s about ensuring positive outcomes for adolescents. Connecting youth to services and opportunities that help them reach their full potential can help prevent teen pregnancy. This means engaging youth within their communities\, schools\, organizations\, and families in a manner that is productive and constructive. Visit the following websites to gather more information about NTPPM and how you can help: https://npin.cdc.gov/pages/national-teen-pregnancy-prevention-month\, https://opa.hhs.gov/NTPPM\, https://www.cdc.gov/teenpregnancy/about/index.htm \nPreeclampsia Awareness Month \nSome women have high blood pressure during pregnancy. This can put the mother and her baby at risk for problems during the pregnancy. High blood pressure can also cause problems during and after delivery. The good news is that high blood pressure is preventable and treatable. High blood pressure\, also called hypertension\, is very common. In the United States\, high blood pressure happens in 1 in every 12 to 17 pregnancies among women ages 20 to 44. High blood pressure in pregnancy has become more common. However\, with good blood pressure control\, you and your baby are more likely to stay healthy. The most important thing to do is talk with your health care team about any blood pressure problems so you can get the right treatment and control your blood pressure—before you get pregnant. Getting treatment for high blood pressure is important before\, during\, and after pregnancy. SUMMARY:Mother's Equal Pay Day
DESCRIPTION:Mothers are paid 70 cents for every dollar paid to fathers. On this day\, we will be raising awareness about the wage gap experienced by moms and its disproportionate impact on moms of color. We will be highlighting how pay discrimination shows up in workplace and the impacts of COVID-19\, including a discussion about frontline moms and how moms are essential in the workplace and in the home.  \nLearn more about Mother’s Equal Pay Day by visiting http://www.equalpaytoday.org/moms-equal-pay-day-2021 or https://women.ca.gov/mothers-equal-pay-day/

SUMMARY:National Bombshells' Day
DESCRIPTION:Calls for women and their female friends to be celebrated. Due to an ever-growing technological world and the increased exposure levels\, everyone has a set of expectations dumped onto them in terms of how they should look\, behave\, dress up\, etc. Females\, especially\, continue to have immense societal/patriarchal preconceptions pushed onto them. A basic example is makeup. Women receive comments if they wear too much makeup\, too little makeup\, or no makeup at all — either way\, there’s no winning. Thus\, National Bombshells’ Day was created to highlight the importance of spreading self-love and love among women.

SUMMARY:National Women's Health Week
DESCRIPTION:National Women’s Health Week starts each year on Mother’s Day to encourage women and girls to make their health a priority. Even during COVID-19 when many of us are at home\, there are safe ways for you to stay active and healthy. Women personify many roles in our lives. Two out of every three caregivers in the United States are women\, meaning they provide daily or regular support to children\, adults\, or people with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Women who are caregivers have a greater risk for poor physical and mental health. Preventive care can keep disease away or detect problems early so that treatment is more effective. Protect your health by identifying the care you may need. \nLearn steps on how you can better your health by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/women/nwhw/index.htm or https://www.womenshealth.gov/nwhw/about

SUMMARY:National Women's Check-Up Day
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this National Women’s Health Week (NWHW)\, May 9\, 2021\, is to remind women that these appointments are vital for helping them maintain healthy lifestyles\, identify issues early\, and hopefully avoid serious health risks. \nTop 5 steps to prioritizing your health \n\n\nAct now – CDC reported in June 2020 that an estimated 4 in 10 U.S. adults had delayed or avoided medical care due to concerns about COVID-191. Finding the time to schedule your annual checkup can be challenging\, but don’t wait. Take Time to Care\, TODAY.  \n\n\nPlan your checkup – Talk with your healthcare provider today to learn about and schedule your annual checkup. Routine checkups are an important part of preventative care and can help you get the answers and support you need to help manage your health throughout the year. \n\n\nRemember other health visits\, exams\, and screenings – Wondering if it’s time for you to get a mammogram? Pap smear? Colonoscopy? There may be other health visits\, exams\, and screenings you need depending on what stage of life you’re in. During your annual checkup\, talk with your healthcare provider about other exams and screenings you may need to support your health.  \n\n\nBe prepared – Your healthcare provider may ask you questions during your annual checkup about your health history\, current lifestyle\, medication use\, and more. Ask your healthcare provider what you need to bring to your checkup when scheduling it. Make sure you bring the information you need to have these important conversations during your visit. You can also prepare a list of questions you may want to ask to ensure you have all the information you need to make the best health decisions for yourself after your visit.  \n\n\nCare for your “whole” self – In addition to getting up to date on exams you may need\, there are many other ways you can support your physical\, mental\, and emotional health and wellbeing today\, and throughout the year. The FDA OWH has many health resources to answer your questions\, inform your decisions\, and support conversations with your healthcare provider. \n\n\nTo learn more about this day please visit https://www.fda.gov/consumers/knowledge-and-news-women-owh-blog/national-womens-checkup-day-take-time-care-today
