START A COMMISSION
Having a local commission on the status of women or women and girls is a way to make sure women are at the table for local policy discussion. We encourage women across the state to start a local commission if you do not have one in your area.
FIND FUNDING
Grants are a good way to get funding for the things your commission wants to do. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:
California Grant Watch
The Foundation Center
California Community Foundation (Los Angeles)
BE A CATALYST FOR CHANGE
You don’t need a lot of money to make a big impact. Your commission can bring together non-profit groups in your community for regular panel discussions or public hearings on the state of women in your community.
Several state departments also provide resources for women:
The Department of Veterans Services (CalVET)
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services
The California Victims Compensation Board
The Department of Justice
Family Services
TELL US WHAT MATTERS TO YOU!

THE CALIFORNIA WOMEN’S WELL BEING INDEX
Created in partnership between the California Budget & Policy Center and the Women’s Foundation of California, this index is a multifaceted, composite measure that consists of five “dimensions”: Health, Personal Safety, Employment & Earnings, Economic Security, and Political Empowerment. Each dimension is composed of six indicators that have been standardized and combined to create dimension scores, on a scale from zero to 100, for each of California’s 58 counties. The five dimension scores have been combined to create an overall Women’s Well-Being Index score for each county.
The data is available for download in excel format and there are policy suggestions to help advance the state of women in our state. Click the image below to find out how the women in your county are doing!
