I.            WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER

Legislative Analyst Katherine Squire called the meeting order at 3:33 pm.

III.    MINUTES: August 20; September 29; October 2; October 6, 2025

Councilmember Shonia Sharma moves to approve the August 20, September 29, October 2, and October 6, 2025 meeting minutes. The motion is seconded by Councilmember Sriya Srinivasan.

IV.    YAC GIRLS AGENDA

A. Education and Workforce Development Workgroup Report 

Councilmember Choi shared the workgroup’s discussion of expanding STEM access in schools in order to equip women and girls with the tools to succeed in all fields. Councilmember Parkin brought up the issue of lack of resources for teen mothers in schools, specifically because of limited access to childcare, suggesting that the workgroup take this into consideration when making policy recommendations. Councilmember Choi then discussed the gender pay gap and the impact of it on family health and wellbeing, pointing out the prevalence of this in education. Councilmembers Sophie Kim and Choi will draft the revised issue statement.  

B. Health and Access Workgroup Report 

Councilmember Chu summarized the workgroup’s discussion of menstrual equity, eating disorders, and healthcare access in rural communities. The workgroup suggested the idea of a mobile clinic to bring to underserved areas. Councilmember Srinivasan is working to include more statistics on eating disorders. Councilmember Nicole Kim suggested adding more data on access to menstrual products in schools. Councilmember Specht then brought up the use of statistics on school lunches to help solve food insecurity. Councilmember Srinivasan went on to discuss potential resources for students to use when identifying eating disorders and to contact for help, and is working on the revised issue statement with Councilmember Nicole Kim.  

C. Safety and Prevention Workgroup Report 

Councilmember Sharma summarized the workgroup’s discussion of teen dating violence, particularly in terms of expanding education in schools for self-defense and signs and resources for domestic violence, as well as the idea of making a youth specific text line for domestic violence. Councilmember Specht will draft the revised issue statement. 

D. Cover page for Girls Agenda 

Councilmembers Sophie Kim and Sonia Sharma will work on the cover page with the Communications team.  

V.    Announcements 

A. 2025-2026 YAC Term Extension

YAC term end has been extended from May 2026 to August 2026. Present councilmembers then decided whether or not they would extend their terms with the option of deciding at a later time. Councilmembers Camille Chu, Sriya Srinivasan, Bethany Zhao, Eucharistia Peter, Sonia Sharma, Allyson Chan, Brooke Specht, and Nicole Kim would like to extern their term to August. 

B. Bill Submission Form 

Meetings will be set up as bills come in and the form is still open and available to new suggestions. 

C. News and Review Article Update 

Councilmembers Kim and Srinivasan shared about their time at the event, discussing being able to share their experiences in the YAC. 

D. Commission 60th Anniversary Convening Update

Councilmember Specht gave an overview of the event, discussing the experience of meeting women and girls with similar interests towards bettering the communities.

E. YAC Representative for Full Commission Meeting 

Next Full Commission Meeting – January 12th 1-4 pm. Councilmember Eucharistia Peter will present at the next meeting.
