I.            WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER

Legislative Analyst Katherine Squire called the meeting order at 3:03 pm.

III.    YAC GIRLS AGENDA

A.  Safety and Prevention Issue Statement

Sonia Sharma emphasized the importance of recognizing how the gender pay gap has influenced domestic violence, teen dating violence, and sexual violence.

B. Presentation and Discussion of Bill Proposals by Workgroup Members 

Sonia Sharma discussed an idea for implementing self-defense in curriculum. Alex Zucco added that self-defense currently exists in curriculum but is not funded.

Eucharistia Peter cited two bills they researched, AB 2308 (2024) on domestic violence protective orders and AB 2422 (2024) which involved the department of financial protection.

Workgroup members also discussed the need to greater support creating resources for schools to educate students on the signs of teen dating violence, identifying what an unhealthy relationship may look like, and the digital safety aspect of this problem. Members discussed that digital safety and media literacy are important as teen dating violence has also moved to happen in the online environment. Members emphasized the importance of online safety with the rise of AI tools and potential for misuse.

Workgroup members also discussed their varying experiences with learning about teen dating violence in schools, with some members experiencing taking a course freshman year while another member taking a course both freshman year and senior year. Members also discussed varying access to support resources and technology like canvas.

Workgroup members discussed the lack of youth-specific teen dating violence resources, with many resources being oriented toward adults and also the lack of a hotline specifically for teen dating violence.

Sonia Sharma discussed the importance of sharing resources to youth on accessing healthcare insurance.

Eucharistia highlighted the importance of addressing gun violence.
